La revue des travaux réalisés jusqu’en 2003, relatifs à la systématique des spongiaires, à la bionomie benthique et aux inventaires de la biodiversité marine en Tunisie, ainsi que les nombreuses signalisations récentes, nous ont permis de dresser une liste de 143 espèces de démosponges en Tunisie. Elles se répartissent dans 65 genres, 37 familles et 13 ordres (dont 3 sous ordres), et sont représentées de façon non homogène dans les régions Nord, Sud et Est de la Tunisie. La région Sud est la plus riche aussi bien au niveau générique que spécifique. Ces espèces sont classées en trois groupes différents. Le premier groupe est composé de 33 espèces à large répartition géographique s’étalant du Nord au Sud de la Tunisie ; le second groupe est composé de 37 espèces qui ont été signalées dans deux régions à la fois (Nord et Sud, Nord et Est ou Est et Sud). Le troisième groupe, composé de 72 espèces, est le plus important et la répartition géographique des espèces qui le composent est restreinte à l’une des trois régions retenues (soit la région Nord, ou bien la région Est ou bien la région Sud). Par ailleurs l’étude de similarité entre ces trois régions (coefficient de Czekanowski), plutôt faible et assez proche pour les 3 régions, ne permet pas de tirer une conclusion satisfaisante quant à la présence d’un centre potentiel de diffusion régionale. Bien au contraire la présence du contingent de 72 espèces à occurrence régionale unique, renforce l’idée de l’existence de spécificités régionales des stocks des démosponges tunisiennes, notamment dans la région Nord et Sud de la Tunisie.
