Durant l'été de l'année 1863, je résolus d'aller faire un séjour sur les bords du golfe de Biscaye et de m'y livrer à l'étude de la faune océanique. Fontarabie et Saint-Sébastien, les deux seules localités que j'aie examinées au point de vue zoologique, se montrèrent toutefois peu favorables au but que je poursuivais. Je me range donc entièrement à l'avis de M. de Quatrefages en ce qui concerne les difficultés que cette côte présente aux naturalistes. Les rochers des falaises opposent aux vagues des parois presque verticales, et se réduisent sous l'effort des lames en un sable fin qui forme partout le sol du littoral. Ce sable, continuellement soulevé et labouré par les flots, n'offre pas d'abri suffisant pour une faune nombreuse. En outre la mer, généralement trop ouverte, est peu propice à la pêche au filet. Dans le port de Saint-Sébastien seulement je juis tenter avec mon compagnon de voyage, M. Aloïs Humbert, de récolter des animaux pélagiques. Mais celte récolte se montra elle-même peu abondante. Les Acanthomètres dominaient dans le produit du filet et c'est à peine si quelques rares méduses craspédotes ou quelques larves d'annélides s'associaient à elles. En revanche, nos bocaux renfermaient un certain nombre de larves de Planariés, appartenant au type muni de processus digités, connu sous le nom de type de Müller. Nous pûmes nous assurer que ces larves se transforment en une Planaire très-voisine du Stylochus maculatus Quatrefages, ou même, peut-être, identique avec lui.
Découragés par le maigre résultat de nos tentatives sur la côte de l'Océan, nous décidâmes de nous rendre à Port-Vendres sur le littoral méditerranéen. Les conditions beaucoup plus favorables de cette localitié parurent promettre une abondante moisson d'observations nouvelles. J'eus cependant le regret de voir bientôt partir M. Humbert dont le concours m'eût été plus d'une fois fort utile.
