Checked: verified by a taxonomic editorAuthority Carus (1863: 441) used 'Cirratulida' as a family in a formal way, including in it the nomimal genus Cirratulus and also Dodecaceria (as Dodecaceraea [sic]). Ryckholt's (1851: 29) use of the word Cirratulidae predates that of Carus, but is of a very incidental and informal nature (as shown below) in a work on fossils. The view of Rosenberg & Petit (1987: 57) was that it was valid, and on that basis Blake (1996: 264 footnote) attributed Ryckholt as the author of Cirratulidae. Ryckholt's reference in full is "Des corps serpulaires, pourvus d'une enveloppe coriace, herissee de courtes tubulures, semblent avoir appartenu a des animaux voisins des Holothuridae ou Cirratulidae; ils atteignent une longueur de plus d'un pied et sont enroules en anneaux laches" [approx translation: Serpular bodies, furnished with a leathery envelope, with short tubules, seem to have belonged to animals neighboring Holothuridae or Cirratulidae; they reach a length of more than a foot and are wrapped in loose rings.] As this usage includes the stem of a valid generic name it seems acceptable according to the ICZN code for a family name usage prior to 1930, after which a definition of the family was required. As Ryckholt did not decide which his animals were (Holothuridae or Cirratulidae) this assignment would be too ambivalent for availability after 1930. Since Blake (1996) the authorship as Ryckholt has been adopted over authorship by Carus seemingly universally (eg the Rouse & Pleijel 2001 'Polychaetes' book) but without comment or attribution. Probably these subsequent authors did not examine Ryckholt's work themselves. Although likely not unavailable technically it should be apparent that Ryckholt's usage is meaningless as a contribution to an understanding of Annelida family classification [G. Read, December 2017]. [details]
