Notes  Alien species: Originally, the diatom Coscinodiscus wailesii only occurred in the Pacific and Indian Ocean. It is presumed that the species was introduced into Europe by importing young Japanese oysters, although it's also possible that the introduction took place via ballast water of cargo ships. The diatom is part of the phytoplankton, and can as such be easily distributed along with the prevailing sea currents. The species was first reported in the late 1970's along the Belgian coast, where it's now the entire year round a common planktonic species. [details]
