Description Found on the continental and insular shelves, ranging close inshore and offshore. Feeds on small fishes, cuttlefish, squid, and octopi. Viviparous (with a yolk-sac placenta); litters of 2 to 15 pups, 46 to 80 cm at birth. Forms schools. Highly migratory off Florida and Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. Utilized fresh and dried salted for human consumption. Also valuable for hides and fins, and liver for oil. [details]
