Description The hypotheca is trapezoidal to hemispherical and acuminate at the antapex. The cingulum is wide, descending 1.5–2 times its own width. The sulcus is sigmoid, anteriorly narrow, becoming posteriorly wider and reaching the antapex. The first apical plate (1’) is narrow and prolonged anteriorly by the large X plate. The three anterior intercalary plates are contiguous. The thecal surface is covered by longitudinal striae and optional cross reticulations, and perfored by pores. The nucleus is elongated and located in the equatorial region. A mucoid matrix is extruded at the apex. Non motile cells are almost spherical (cysts?) and often embedded in mucilage.  [details]

Harmful effect Vulcanodinium rugosum forms pinnatoxins, cyclic immines, of which 7 different types are presently known. Pinnatoxins have been found to accumulate in mussels. The effect on humans is presently unknown. V. rugosum is toxic to larvae of sea-urchins, oysters and Artemia [details]
