Etymology Not stated. The specific epithet pectinobranchiata (masculine: pectinobranchiatus) is a New Latin adjective, meaning 'comb shaped branchiae', and presumably refers to the shape of the two pairs of branchiae, described as having a main branch running almost straight to the top, and from which arise numerous smaller dichotomous branches, giving to the whole gill the appearance of a comb: ''Der Hauptast der einzelnen Kiemen läuft fast gerade bis zur Spitze, von dem aus schon dicht über der Basis die zahlreichen, dichotom verzweigten Nebenäste entspringen, so daß die ganze Kieme kammförmig erscheint'' (Hartmann-Schröder, 1965: 254). The specific epithet is composed by the Latin prefix pectin-, from pecten and meaning 'comb', and the Latin adjective branchiata (masculine branchiatus), meaning 'branchiate' or 'having branchiae'.
