Nomenclature The species name is often misspelled "piercei" as has been observed in Clark & Downey (1992: 228) and in Sladen (1889). The correct spelling "piercei" which was named for a famous professor of astronomy and mathematics at Harvard and was a friend of Louis Agassiz. Peirce’s son, Charles, was a private student of Agassiz for six months. (thanks to John Lawrence & Chris Pomory for the adjustment) [details]
