Taxonomy There is a problem with this species and with the type species of Lendenfeldia. Bergquist (1980) erected Lendenfeldia with type species Phyllospongia dendyi var. frondosa Lendenfeld,1889a. The var. frondosa is mentioned as the first variety by Lendenfeld, and since no typical variety is described this should have been named Phyllospongia dendyi var. dendyi according current rules of the ICZN. Bergquist (1980) not only named the var. frondosa as the type of Lendenfeldia but also raised this variety to species level as Lendenfeldia frondosa, an illegal action if the variety frondosa is in fact the typical variety. Hooper and Wiedenmayer (1994) assigned both varieties (P.dendyi var. frondosa and P. dendyi var. digitata) to the synonymy of Lendenfeldia plicata (Esper), which would have made the above considerations largely an academic matter. Unfortunately, Cook & Bergquist (2002) rejected this proposed synonymy and reestablished Lendenfeldia frondosa as a valid species and the type of the genus Lendenfeldia. It is inescapable that Lendenfeldia frondosa cannot be maintained as an available name in the genus Lendenfeldia and will have to be replaced by Lendenfeldia dendyi. [details]
