Harmful effects and toxins Chaetoceros costatus has recently been shown to produce the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA), the causative agent of amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP). DA production was confirmed by LC–MS/MS in cultured C. costatus, with cellular quotas of 2–6 fg cell⁻¹. However, these concentrations are approximately three orders of magnitude lower than those reported for highly toxigenic diatoms such as Pseudo-nitzschia australis and Nitzschia navis-varingica, and are considered far below levels associated with known ecological or toxicological effects. Thus, although C. costatus should now be regarded as a DA-producing/toxigenic diatom, its capacity to cause harmful algal blooms or ASP under natural conditions remains unestablished. The authors suggest that environmental or physiological stressors could potentially enhance DA production, but the relevant triggers in C. costatus are currently unknown. [details]Unreviewed
