Description: Colour in life: the shiny skin uniform burgundy (Sloan et al., 1979).
Also distributed in SE Arabia, Maldive area, Ceylon, East Indies, South Pacific Is. And Hawaiian Is. (Clark & Rowe, 1971); Lakshadweep (India)(Sastry, 1991); Australia (Rowe & Gates, 1995); Andaman and Nicobar Is., Bay of Bengal (Sastry, 1997).
General distribution: East coast of Africa to Hawaiian Islands (Sastry, 1991); tropical, Indo-Pacific Ocean, depth range 0-5 m. (Rowe & Gates, 1995).
Ecology: benthic, inshore (Rowe & Gates, 1995). [details]
Remark: Type data: status undetermined in Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris (France) (Rowe & Gates, 1995).
Type locality: ?Australia; Lamarck (1816) gives the locality as 'les mers australes' but Perrier (1875) as 'Ile de France' (Mauritius) in Clark & Rowe (1971). [details]
