Description This species extends from the Red Sea and Madagascar to Hawaii and Easter Island, and from Japan to Northern Australia (Massin, 1996); from the Red Sea to Hawaii (Tortonese, 1980); tropical Indo-Pacific in Kalk (1958); tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific lower shore and reef crest (Rowe & Gates, 1995).
Also recorded from SE Arabia, Maldive area, Ceylon, East Indies, north Australia, Philippine, China, south Japan, South Pacific Is. and Hawaiian Is. (Clark & Rowe, 1971); Australia (Rowe & Gates, 1995).
Ecology: benthic, inshore, detritus feeder, deposit feeder (Rowe & Gates, 1995); under stones or in crevices, depth range 2-19 m. (Massin, 1996). [details]
