| Notes | |
This is a junior homonym of Alcyonium cydonium Linnaeus, 1767, which is a Hymeniacidon, and also of Alcyonium cydonium sensu Müller, 1796. For that reason, the latter name was replaced by Fleming , 1828 with the name Cydonium muelleri. However, since Müller's A. cydonium is not a sponge, this replacement name is unvailable. Jameson's Alcyonium cydonium is a Geodia , clearly different from Linnaeus' A. cydonium (=Hymeniacidon), and thus it becomes available as Geodia cydonium. [details]
Type locality: Firth of Forth, Scotland. [details]
