| Notes | |
There are rivalling names for this species (see list of synonyms). The present name, considered valid, is based on Alcyonium cydonium Jameson, 1911. This is a junior homonym of Alcyonium cydonium Linnaeus, 1767, which is a Hymeniacidon, and also of Alcyonium cydonium sensu Müller, 1796. For that reason, the latter name was replaced by Fleming, 1828 with the name Cydonium muelleri. However, since Müller's A. cydonium has been demonstrated to be not a sponge, this replacement name is unvailable for the present species. Jameson's Alcyonium cydonium is a Geodia, clearly different from Linnaeus' A. cydonium (=Hymeniacidon), and thus it becomes available as Geodia cydonium. [details]
