Type species Type species Nereis cylindraria belgica Pallas 1766, by a subsequent designation, probably by Hartman (1941:325), not Hartman (1959) as stated in Hutchings & Peart (2002), but Hartman could also have been copying an earlier author (as is often the case for her catalogue types of genera). [details]

Etymology Not stated. However, Lamarck does describe "pectinibus duobus paleaceis auratis", which means approximately "with two golden combs of paleae" in reference to the anterior chaetae. Almost all authors have treated the name as feminine, and this is in accord with the adjective, pectinarius, a um, (see Lewis & Short Latin Dictionary) meaning of or belonging to combs. Used as a genus as Pectinaria it must be treated as a feminine noun form. [details]

Homonymy Pectinaria Lamarck, 1818 is senior homonym to Pectinaria Zalessky, 1926, in Foraminifera incertae sedis. Pectinaria Zalessky is an unreplaced junior homonym. The foraminiferan genus was created for Pectinaria costata Zalessky, 1926. [details]

Authority There is unnecessary confusion in literature over the authorship of Amphictene and Pectinaria. The original texts should be consulted. Although there are taxa where Lamarck appears to usurp Savigny's unpublished work, this is one case where Lamarck and Savigny are independent. It is clear that Lamarck (1818) authored Pectinaria and Savigny (1822) authored Amphictene. The respective texts are not at all the same. Savigny creates a detailed taxonomic structure of the genus with two tribes (tribu) for three species. Lamarck does not mention Amphictene or Savigny, but Savigny mentions Pectinaria (as P. belgica), but he gives an incorrect literature reference to it. Hutchings & Peart (2002:102) in their review are incorrect in their statement that "because Savigny actually made the description, we therefore quote it as Savigny in Lamarck, 1818", and they thus also have the authorships wrongly reversed when they attribute Amphictene to Lamarck. Savigny is the author. Earlier Hartman (1959) catalogue apparently attributes both to Savigny, although note that confusingly her bibliography reference is actually to the 1818 work of Lamarck. Hartman (1941:325) previously had the authorships correctly assigned as Amphictene Savigny, and Pectinaria Lamarck [details]

Diagnosis Cephalic veil free, rim cirrate,13 biramous chaetigers. From Zhang & Hutchings (2019): "Cephalic veil completely free from operculum. Rim of cephalic veil with numerous long cirri. Dorsal and lateral margin of semicircular operculum smooth. Ventral margin of operculum with numerous notopodial paleae on each side. Comb-like branchiae present on segments 3–4. Notopodia other than those of segment 1, which bear paleae, on segments 5–21 (17 pairs). Neuropodia, 13 pairs on segments 8–20 with transverse tori, with row of uncini. Uncini with more than one longitudinal rows of major teeth. Scaphe flattened dorsally with anal flap and distinctly separate from posterior segments.

[details]

Grammatical gender Pectinaria is feminine in its formation and has been treated as feminine since first used.

[details]

Publication date Lamarck (1818:349) appears to claim he had previously published Pectinaria on p.96 of his 1812 work "Extrait du cours ...", and Malmgren (1866:355) accepted that date for the genus when he included Cistena (Leach, 1816) as a synonym of Pectinaria. However, Lamarck (1812) had only an undefined "Pectinaire" in a list of four names of tubicolous polychaetes, contrasted with solid-tubed worms (serpulids, etc). Lucas & Holthius (1975: 85) comment that "Pectinaire, apart from being a vernacular name, is also a nomen nudum, and for either of these reasons unavailable. There cannot be the least doubt, therefore, that Pectinaria dates from Lamarck, 1818."  [details]

[details]
