Taxonomy Burton's (1959a) Chrotella cavernosa is not conspecific with Lamarck's Cinachyrella cavernosa (as Tethya). One of the specimens labeled with this name is close if not conspecific to Cinachyrella australiensis (Carter, 1886). The other specimen is characterized by possessing large anatriaenes with broad cladomes (see Van Soest & Beglinger, 2008: 755). Further research is necessary to see whether it is an undescribed species.  [details]
