Cryptic speciation The species exhibits distinct red and white forms but these forms do not show spicular differences. Van Soest et al. (2021) treated the red and white specimens of this species separately (as M.(M.) grandis 'red' and M.(M.) aff. grandis 'white'), in anticipation of possible future distinction between the two forms. The white form has a restricted distribution, reported only from northern Indonesia and the Gulf of Thailand. [details]
