From editor or global species database
Editor's comment Day (1953) reported Marphysa depressa from South Africa, but this is today regarded as a misidentification of a species later described as M. sherlockae Kara et al, 2020.
Kara et al (2020; 26/36) state that "Additionally, Day compared his material with a specimen collected from New Zealand by Ehlers (1904), most likely to confirm his identification." This is not correct. Ehlers did not travel, and in his 1904 report Ehlers only examined Schmarda's original material deposited in Germany. Day (1953) had actually examined a specimen in the British Museum donated by New Zealand-based William Benham. Also Day (1953:434) states that "a specimen from New Zealand identified by Ehlers, 1907, and deposited in the British Museum has been found identical with the present South African material". This is not correct either. Ehlers (1907) gives a checklist-like repeat of Schmarda's record, and Ehlers in Germany had nothing to do with the specimens Benham separately donated to the British Museum in England. To repeat, Ehlers only saw Schmarda's original Auckland specimens, Day only saw material collected much later by Benham, probably collected in Dunedin where he was based, not Auckland. [G.
