Abstract
    The meiobenthic nematode fauna of the deep Bay of Biscay is studied at the species level. A description of the population components is given. The faunal affinities between the stations and the variation of some diversity parameters are analyzed. Among the six stations studied, diversity seems to be extremely high in comparison with the previous data. Similarities between the samples are generally very low. Populations of the continental slope and abyssal rise can be roughly separated from those of the abyssal plain. The evolution of the diversity indexes (Fisher, Margalef, Shannon) corroborates the hypothesis of a faunistical change occurring around the depth of 4000m. The high diversity, as well as the strong equitability of species, are related to the increasing numbers of microhabitats as defined by organic matter parameters.
