Abstract

Identification of species, the most fundamental unit in taxonomy, is the essential first step of any biological study. This introduction to a guidebook to families and genera of marine isopods of the world outlines the significance of isopods in marine environments, summarises taxonomical research, explains how the guidebook provides access to what has been written before, and lays out the conventions and information contained in subsequent chapters.
