Nomenclature Licher (1999: 54-57) revised the type material of Syllis gracilis Schmarda, 1861, and determined that it was a senior synonym of Syllis (Ehlersia) anops Ehlers, 1897. However, Syllis gracilis Schmarda, 1861 was also a junior primary homonym of Syllis gracilis Grube, 1840, for which reason, to avoid confusion and in accordance with article 23 (a) of the ICZN (Third Edition, 1985), Licher presented the name Typosyllis anops (Ehlers, 1897) as the valid name for Schmarda's species.
