Additional information A. brevispiculata first described by Dollfus (1966) from the pigmy sperm whale, Kogia breviceps.Davey (1971) synonymised A. brevispiculata with A. physeteris.
A. brevispiculata was recognized as a valid species based on allozyme studies Mattiucci et al., 2001).
Shamsi et al 2012 provided a re-description of specimens found in Kogia sima.
