Distribution North America; from Greenland to Virginia [details]

Reproduction Breeds in high Arctic in North America from Greenland to Alaska being found farthest south in Hudson Bay. Also Breeds on the arctic coast and islands of European Russia and Siberia. Winters as far north as there is open water and casually south in North America to Georgia, the Great Lakes, and California. In Europe it is found rarely in winter south to the British Isles, the Baltic, and southern Russia. [details]
