Type locality Mediterranean Sea [details]
Type material Barnich et al. (2000) and Kristian Fauchald (2013 pers. comm.) claim different material as holotype. Since position, date and depth are in agreement and since the material in Institut d'Ecologie Appliquee, Angers is a single elytra on a slide, both are here treated as holotype, parts of the same specimen. For USNM specimen Fauchald noted: "Acanthicolepis cousteaui is from the Mediterranean Sea, off Banyuls, France, and was described by Laubier and placed in the collections in the Banyuls Marine Lab (as mentioned in the original description); it was a single specimen, which when the collections were more or less dissolved, was sent to Marian Pettibone, so the specimen registered as NMNH (=USNM) 42037 is the holotype". The "Calypso" specimen from Angers contains the information from Barnich et al. (2000) [details]
