Etymology Not stated by the author. The specific epithet japonicus is a Latin adjective, meaning 'of or relating to Japan' or 'Japanese', and refers clearly to the type locality of the species. [details]
Habitat Shallow water muddy grounds in brackish and euryhaline areas of estuaries and coastal lagoons. Stated to be euryhaline and freshwater tolerant. [details]
Nomenclature According to ICZN Articles 31.2, 32.3 and 34.2, the name 'japonicus' is an incorrect original spelling for gender agreement and needs to be corrected to 'japonica', retaining the authorship and date of the original spelling. [details]

Type locality Japan, Sea of Japan, Pacific Ocean. The species was described with base on specimens from two different brackish water coastal lagoons in the Japanese southern coast of the Sea of Japan, but no type was designated. The two localities are: i) Kukusi-ko [= Kukushi-ko, Fukui, Chubu, Honshu (gazetteer estimate 35.5996°, 135.9078°); 1-2.2 m, gray mud]; ii) Zinzai-ko [= Jinzai-ko, Shimane, Chugoku, Honshu (gazetteer estimate 35.3257°, 132.6829°); 0.8-2.2 m, brown mud].
