Synonymy This combination is the result of a case of secondary homonymy of Axinella lamellata Bergquist, 1961 with Axinella lamellata (Dendy, 1905, originally as Spongosorites lamellatus). Bergquist (1970) replaced Axinella lamellata with the nomen novum Axinella tricalyciformis. Subsequently, Alvarez & Hooper (2009) reassigned this to the genus Cymbastela, but this action evoked application of ICZN art. 59.4, which demands that a secondary junior homonym is to be reinstated if it is subsequently assigned to a genus other than the original. Accordingly, Cymbastela tricalyciformis is assigned to the synonymy of Cymbastela lamellata (Bergquist, 1961). [details]
