Authority The Systema Porifera and De Weerdt (2002) cited Gray (1867) as the author of the family, overlooking the fact that Bowerbank (1862: 1120) already erected this family mentioning Chalina oculata as the type species of the genus Chalina. Although Grant (1861) coined the order 'Chalinida' with the genus name Chalina and two other genus names the authorship of the family may be disputed because formally an ordinal name falls outside of the ruling of the ICZN and Grant did not cite any species for this 'order' and genus, making his genus Chalina a nomen nudum. Nomina nuda are unavailable and as such cannot be the type of a family. This is all formal, maybe unfortunately denying Grant his authorship of family and genus. [details]
