Original description The author of this name remains unclear. The citation of Milne Edwards is likely a mistake made by Metcalf (1918: 88), who refers to Cuvier (1828) as the source of the author-name. In his reference of Milne-Edwards (1828) he appears to cite a paper by Audoin and Milne Edwards on the fauna of the Îles Chausey in the Annales des Sciences vol. 15. However the name Salpa clostra is not found in this article, but there is a note saying that a large number of plates with invertebrates observed at the Îles Chausey were delivered to the Académie des Sciences Naturelles after Audoin and Milne Edwards completed their lecture. The summary of the lecture is printed in the Annales des Sciences Naturelles vol. 15 and the plates are probably containing images of Salpa clostra, but the plates were apparently not published, certainly not in 1828, but in Milne Edwards later work (1837) Salps are being treated, including Salpa fusiformis, which appears to be the senior synonym. Yount (1954) also mentions Salpa clostra but gives Deshayes (1836-1846), vol. 121, fig 2, as author and reference. Yount did not provide a proper reference for Deshayes, an author of encyclopedic wiorks on the animal kingdom. So far (2024) no clear author-year is known for this species. [details]
