From editor or global species database
Classification The genus Besselia is based on the guesswork of Erman (1854) that Gorgonia paradoxa Esper, 1797 is related to the present species and that both Esper's and Erman's material belong to the same genus. A type species was not indicated by Erman. The properties of the genus may be derived from Erman's description and illustration of the microscopical details of the present species, which points to similarity with Mycale (Arenochalina). If hat would turn out to be the case, then the genus name Besselia would be a senior synonym of Mycale. Gray, 1867. Suppression of Besselia as a valid name under ICZN art. 23.9 is then necessary. The genus relationship with Gorgonia paradoxa Esper remains unproven. If G. paradoxa would be indicated as the type species of Besselia then the name becomes a simple junior synonym. [details]
