Remark In some polyps of the holotype of Carcicocaenia pfenderae Alloiteau, 1953, a lamellar columella seems to be present. However, the structure which appears to be a lamellar columella occurs in those polyps that are most likely in the process of intracalicinal budding. Apparently, in Carcicocoenia the type of intracalicinal budding, which is one of the generic features that characterizes the genus Complexastrea, takes place by septal devision, whereby two opposite septa merge, resulting in the development of two new polyps. Therefore, the existence of any kind of columella in Carcicocoenia cannot be suggested, thus closely agreeing with Complexastrea. [details]
