Note Monterosato included in Metaxia two species,...
Type species Monterosato included in Metaxia two species, one of which was Cerithium rugulosum; he attributed that name to Sowerby, implying that he refered to the illustration by Sowerby, 1855, of Adams' Cerithium rugulosum, and Crosse [1885, Journal de Conchyliologie, 33(2): 141] fixed Cerithium rugulosum C.B. Adams, 1850, as type species of Metaxia. However, Metaxia rugulosa (C.B. Adams, 1850) is a Caribbean species, and Monterosato misidentified the Mediterranean Metaxia metaxa (delle Chiaje, 1828) under that name. [details]
