WoRMS activities

This page provides a chronological overview of the funded activities related to the World Register of Marine Species.
It includes editor activities that were possible through financial support of different projects and programmes and the work done by the data management team.

2016

WoRMS data management

The activities report of the WoRMS data management team of 2016 will be available early 2017.

Editor workshops supported by LifeWatch

In a call to all editors in July 2016, it was announced that LifeWatch would be able to financially support a number of editor workshops. These workshops should aim at physically brining together the editors, giving them the opportunity to organize themselves in a better way, to discuss the way they work (e.g. responsibilities within the group), work on pending issues and make concrete plans towards the future.

The target groups could either be taxonmically, geographically or thematically oriented, with as main goal to make the targetted Register more complete and to define a long-term plan to maintain it. To make the most of these workshops, the programme needs to include at least 1/2 to 1 full day of hands-on working with the online editing interface. This part of the workshop will be covered by the Data Management Team and will allow to give a full overview of the existing and newly developed tools and possibilities of the interface. Next to a future vision, the organizer should also aim at some short-term tangible outcomes, e.g. presentation of the progress, plans and results at an upcoming conference. From the received applications, 4 workshops were granted financial support and they will all take place between January and May 2017.

Data grants supported by LifeWatch

In August 2015, an open call was launched to all WoRMS editors to help fill the remaining gaps in the groups under their taxonomic responsibility. These actions are directly contributing to LifeWatch and its taxonomic backbone.

This taxonomic backbone consists of species information services that will be used to standardise species data and to integrate distributed biodiversity data repositories and operating facilities. As WoRMS is the world standard for marine taxonomic information, WoRMS is a major contributor to this taxonomic backbone.

In total, 17 of the received applications were granted, and a total of 73.000 € is being invested by LifeWatch.
