Diagnosis Fide Ravara et al. (2010) "“Nephtys cornuta appears as sister group to all remaining nephtyids and we here erect a new generic name for it, Bipalponephtys (gender feminine). Morphologically, this species presents conical acicular lobes, poorly developed parapodial lamellae and branchiae, bifid palps and preacicular chaetae of posterior chaetigers that are capillary instead of barred. The last two characters are unique for this new genus and constitute morphological apomorphies." [details]
Synonymy The validity of Bipalponephtys is contested between authors subsequent to its description in 2010, with Jirkov & Dnestrovskaya (2012, "The answer to Ascensão Ravara (2011) about taxonomic status of Bipalponephtys (Polychaeta: Nephtyidae)") strongly advocating it is a synonym of Micronephthys. Since then Ravara & Carvalho (2017: 850) in comments on Micronephthys palatii appear to concede Bipalponephtys is likely a synonym of Micronephthys, but do not do so formally and explicitly, and the comments in question are open to interpretation. Neither group of authors have formally recombined the species placed in Bipalponephtys. The three species included have been reverted to combinations in Micronephthys here (April 2019) [details]
