From editor or global species database
Altitude 700 m above sea level. [details]
Diet Faecal material from the gut content with identifiable chaetae of Megascolecidae oligochaetes, indicating that they may be the main food of the species. [details]
Distribution Pacific Ocean: Fiji. [details]
Etymology The specific epithet vuwaensis refers to the type locality of the species the Vuwa Falls (Wainisavulevu Creek, Viti Levu, Fiji). [details]
Habitat In deposits of gravel and fine sand in areas of fairly still water behind boulders, in fast-flowing reaches of montane freshwater streams. [details]
Human impact From Glasby (1999: 114): ''The Fijian specimens were all collected in 1979 (Ryan, 1980), prior to the completion of the Wainisavulevu Dam above the collection site. The effect of the dam has been to reduce water flow to sites below. A subsequent trip to the area by P. Ryan and myself in February 1987 failed to find the species. Other evidence also suggests that this dam and others in the area have reduced the diversity of stream invertebrates (Haynes, 1994).'' [details]
Reproduction One specimen collected in July 1980 with eight large ova. [details]
Type locality Wainisavulevu Creek (tributary of Wainimala River), above Vuwa Falls, north of Suva, Viti Levu, Fiji, Pacific Ocean (provided location 17°49'55''S, 178°02'30''E; geocoordinates slightly corrected here to -17.8328°, 178.0403°), 700 m above sea level, in deposits of gravel and fine sand in areas of fairly still water behind boulders. [details]
Type material From Glasby (1999: 113): ''The holotype of N. vuwaensis is according to Ryan (1980) deposited at the NMNZ (Wellington). However, both the alcohol and slide collection of the NMNZ were checked and there is no record of the specimen. Further, Ryan (1980) provides no NMNZ catalogue number for the holotype. It appears likely therefore that the holotype of N. vuwaensis was never deposited at the NMNZ, and that material donated to the AM by Ryan and examined here includes the holotype. If this is the case then, it is not possible to distinguish the holotype from among the eight specimens, and they are registered in three separate lots; paratypes were not designated by Ryan.''
