Etymology The specific epithet branchiatum makes reference to the presence of branchiae in the setigerous segments 2-5. Hartman correctly uses a neuter ending in agreement with Sclerobregma [details]
Spelling Hartman (1965) correctly creates an neuter adjectival species-group name of branchiatum, but subsequently (e.g. Hartman & Fauchald, 1971: 129) a changed spelling to 'branchiata' appears, without explanation. This spelling is not correct. Mackie (1991) correctly uses the S. branchiatum spelling but Blake (2025) does not, and misrepresents past spellings in his synonymy of usages. [details]
