Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Ehlers (1864: 256): "Kopflappen ohne Palpen, auf der Unterseite durch eine Furche in der Mittellinie getheilt; drei lange Fühler, erstes Segment ohne Ruder mit zwei langen Fühlercirren; am 2. und 3. Segment über dem Ruder ein langer Rückencirrus; an den übrigen Segmenten über dem Ruder ein kurzer, meist blattartig plattgedrückter Ruckencirrus; Bauchcirren fehlen." [details]

Etymology The generic name Proceraea is composed by the Greek prefix pro-, meaning 'in front of', and the latinization of the Greek word kéras, meaning 'horn', and refers possibly to the presence of the three long antennae referred in the original diagnosis of the genus. [details]
