Taxonomy Bergquist (1980) erected this order on the basis of a mistaken interpretation of the fossil Nepheliospongia, which is not related to Recent petrosid sponges. The name is no longer in use and is replaced (at the suborder level) by Petrosina Boury-Esnault & van Beveren (1982). [details]
