Classification The subgenus was erected by Van Soest (1984: 60) to distinguish it from Acanthacarnus Lévi, 1952, erected as a genus by Lévi, but reduced to subgenus by Van Soest to acknowledge shared cladotylotes. Hooper (1986) demonstrated that the two subgenera were not monophyletic and thus they were abandoned in favour of a single diverse genus Acarnus. [details]
