Taxonomy Nardo's Spongelia was first mentioned in Nardo,1834, with S. elegans and S. putrescens as representatives. According to Schmidt (1862) at least Spongelia elegans was recognizable, but most other authors considered these name to be nomina nuda. In Nardo, 1847 the names were repeated and generally that is accepted as the valid authorship and date for Spongelia elegans. [details]
