Classification Incertae sedis. Most likely an alga. Apart from Pallas' description there are no further specimens known of this enigmatic taxon. He gave no pre-Linnaean references for the specimen. Linnaeus (1767: 1294) listed the present species name as a synonym of his Alcyonium exos, but this a likely error because that species (a junior synonym of Alcyonium palmatum Pallas, 1766) is described from the Mediterranean and is also unlike S. floribunda in shape and further characteristics. Later on, Gmelin in Linnaeus (1791) listed Spongia floribunda as a 'good' species with Pallas' definition, descriptive notes and Indian Ocean locality repeated. [details]
Description Pallas' description translated from Latin:
Amorphous sponge, confluent branched woolly bundles, thickened at the apex.
Description: It has the height of a palm and beyond, sub-fruticiform, composed of irregular fascicles, confluent in branches, made of compact woolly tissue, on the surface as hairy, and with a thick obtuse extremity; hence they appear here and there are like cauliflower. Color gray, scattered with pale red in fresh specimens; brownish-grey in rotten specimens. When burnt it betrays its vegetable nature. Location: Indian Ocean [details]
Type locality Indian Ocean, no further data. [details]
