Holotype MLP Po. 2, geounit North Patagonian Gulfs [details]
From editor or global species database
Validity The variety was described by Cuartas from the North Patagonian coast of Argentina, Provincia de Rio Negro, off Bahía Creek, 41.1°S 68.98°W, depth unknown (holotype Museo de La Plata, Dept. of Invertebrates, Po. 2). It differs from the typical variety Suberites tortuosus Lévi (1959: 125, pl. 5 fig. 4, text-fig. 14, described from São Tomé, West Africa, approximate coordinates 0.3833°N 6.75°E, depth not given, type material in MNHN), in the size of the tylostyles (length 250–410 μm vs. 150–900 μm in the typical variety). Cuartas stated that there is a great resemblance in shape between the two varieties, but her specimen does not show clear branches, merely lobate digitations. To acknowledge the differences, Van Soest (2024: 89) proposed to recognize the var. austral at the species level, to be named Suberites austral nom.nov. with authorship and year of his work in stead of Cuartas', due to the variety being erected after 1960, cf. ICZN art. 45.5.1, but with description and type material taken from Cuartas. [details]
