Nomenclature This is not Haliclona cancellata (Sowerby, 1806 as Spongia), which combination is a junior synonym of Haliclona (Reniera) cinerea (Grant, 1826). Sowerby's Spongia cancellata was a junior homonym of Spongia cancellata Linnaeus, 1767 (currently Aplysina fulva (Pallas, 1766), and is thus invalid (see Van Soest et al. 2020: 16). Carter's Isodictya simulans var. cancellata was subsequently assigned to Haliclona cancellata.but the soecies is not recently recognized or described. [details]
