The specific epithet grossa (masculine: grossus) is a Latin adjective meaning 'thick', 'large', or 'great', and refers presumably to the big size of the species, with the posteriorly incomplete holotype being described as ''largest, measuring 21 mm in length and 3.5 mm in width for 46 setigers including parapodia'' (Imajima, 1990: 8).
