Etymology Not explicitly stated by the author. The epithet major is a Latin adjective meaning 'greater' or 'larger', and refers to the bigger size of the variety in relation to the stem species: "Les deux individus du détroit de Molo ont des caractères concordant avec ceux de l'espèce ci-dessus [Ammotrypane sibogae Caullery, 1944], mais ils atteignent une taille beaucoup plus grand" (Caullery, 1944: 41).
