Etymology The specific epithet acus is a Latin noun meaning 'needle' or 'pin', and presumably refers to the ''Enlarged acicular [noto] setae present in about last 13 setigers'' (Rainer, 1973: 550), which are pictured as being needle-shaped (op. cit., fig. 3F). As Boccardia, and logically Paraboccardia also, is feminine, 'acus' should have had a feminine ending if an adjective, therefore we should probably treat 'acus' as an unchanging noun in apposition. Habitat In shells of live Perna canaliculus (Gmelin, 1791) and Austrovenus stutchburyi (W. Wood, 1828) (recorded as Chione stutchburyi), from midlittoral sand. [details]
Type locality South Pacific Ocean, New Zealand, South Island, Otago Peninsula, Papanui Beach (geocoordinates not provided, estimated with gazetteer to be approximately lat. -45.865º, long. 170.742º), lower midlittoral, in shells of live Perna canaliculus (Gmelin, 1791) . [details]
