Lateral line present. Pectoral skeleton with 3 radials. Basisphenoid or posttemporal usually lacking. Nasal bones paired. Postcleithra 2. Hypurals fused. Spines in dorsal fin usaully 4; soft rays 6-11. Anal fin soft rays 4-10. About 25 cm maximum length. Commonly sexually dimorphic. Colorful.  [details]
