Etymology The specific epithet maculata, "spotted", makes reference to the pigmentation of antennae, tentacular cirri and dorsal cirri, which have every third or fourth annulus black on the ventral side, while the dorsal side is not pigmented. [details]

Type locality Pacific Ocean, Japan. The species was described with base on specimens from two different localities, Seto and Noto-ogi, both on Honshu. However the original description does not refer which of them is the type locality. [details]
