Note Given as "du Cap" (from the Cape of Good Hope)...
From editor or global species database
Type locality Given as "du Cap" (from the Cape of Good Hope) by Cuvier. However, no specimens have been collected or other reliable records made from Africa since. Robineau (1990)reviewed Paris Museum holdings and accession records and collection notes of Dussumier and made a convincing case that the true type locality is Malabar Coast of India. Cuvier apparently just made a mistake; Dussumier donated other "marsouins" (Cephalorhynchus)from the Cape of Good Hope at the same time that he donated the type specimen of the finless porpoise from India.
