Taxonomy The transfer of Halisarca rubra to genus Oscarella was based on the original - erroneous - description of Hanitsch, 1890. In a follow up publication Hanitsch (1891) provided a correction of the description by acknowlediging that he mistook 'hairs' allocated to the mussel on which the specimen grew for byssus threads. Improved examination demonstrated that the 'hairs' were dendritic spongin fibres rising up from a basal sponge plate. Hanitsch transferred the specimen to the genus Aplysilla as A. rubra. This species needs comparison with the sympatric Aplysilla rosea. It is possible that specimens identified as Hanitsch' species subsequently may have been misidentified as a species of Oscarella.
