Type locality San Juan Island, including Friday Harbour Laboratory shore, Washington, USA. The author Gray gives several locations on the eastern side of the island where the species was collected on the shore, but does not indicate at which of these the holotype was collected. The beach in front of the Laboratory is at 48.5455, -123.0132 [details]
Type material USNM 36067. As at 30 December 2018, the name associated with the holotype in the USNM catalogue appeared to be an unused manuscript name, "Nerilla intermedia Gray" rather than N. inopinata. [details]
Etymology Not stated. However 'inopinatus -a' is an adjectival form of a Latin word meaning unexpected.
